The community of Santa Rosa de Guápiles Costa Rica in the Caribbean trying to halt the expansion of monoculture of pineapple at the hands of fruit companies. Real World Radio heard testimonies of people who come to share information and do not support the installation of a pineapple farm.
In Costa Rica pineapple monoculture has caused serious environmental and social damage. This activity agroindustial had an explosive growth of 600% over the past nine years, to be more present economic activities in the Central American country.
One most emblematic cases are found in communities of Cairo and the French Luiciana Siquirres. One of the subsidiaries of the multinational Del Monte, is responsible for the pollution of the water source for these communities.
Water rationed
these stocks are currently from three years ago, water in tankers to be contaminated traditional sources of water. Every other day, these trucks pass distributing drinking water as the liquid from the tap is contaminated with the herbicide called Bromacil.
